Pittsburgh Randonneurs
1000 km - Pennsylvania Bike Routes
Friday August 3-5, 2012
Rides Description
This is our newest route from our Routemeister Dan Blumenfeld. It utilizes Pennsylvania Bike routes for the
backbone of the route. Dan's description of the route:
On day 1 the escape from Pittsburgh is mostly rolling until Mt Pleasant, then there is a significant (3 mile,
4-5%) climb to Donegal. After that, the biggest single climb of the route on 31 up past Hidden Valley will
lead to what Dan expects will be a woo-hoo-hoo of a descent towards Somerset. The segment from
Bedford is primarily based on PA Bike Route G, and appears reasonable, if rarely flat. Once we get to
Boalsburg (just outside of State College), we'll take an end run around the ridge and pick up the Nittany
Valley pike to Lamar, site of several hotels and plenty of 24-hour amenities.
Day 2 will start off with a long stretch of gentle ascent on the way to Wellsboro, then we'll strike west on
PA Bike Route G as far as Coudersport, before heading north towards the NY border. We'll head across a
lot of gently rolling farmland on our way to Fredonia, on the shore of Lake Erie, then follow the shore south
to the overnight controle.
Day 3 will consist of a variation of a well-known 200K route back to Pittsburgh, wherein we'll head south to
Rochester, then follow Rt 51 all the way back to the start.
Dan's cue sheet reports climbing as:
Total ~17000' climbing Day 1
Total ~ 12000' climbing Day 2
Total ~ 6000' climbing Day 3
